The Dishes Can Wait

“Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword?”

I woke up to a mess in the kitchen and an overflowing laundry basket. Immediately I started sorting the dirty clothes, began a wash and headed to the kitchen to clean. All before coffee, all before time with Jesus.

Lately, I’ve been making to-do lists that don’t have “Time With Jesus” at the top of them. And I feel the change in my days, like something is missing. I complete all the tasks, but fill incomplete by the end of them all.

When I reached for the faucet to start cleaning the dishes, the Holy Spirit whispered, “the dishes can wait”. Um, no. I thought. But really they can and they are because nothing is more important as the word and the truth and the strength I will have after solid, uninterrupted time with Jesus.

Take a look at your to do list. Maybe you’re a wife, a mother, or have a career that wakes you up early and gets you to bed late; no matter the life you live, we have the same 24 hours in a day.  Stop. Breathe. Pray. Really, that’s more than enough time to take care of others, yourself and the yearning of your heart. Make time with Jesus. I promise, the dishes will still be there when your done.

“No, in all these things we are more than conquerors through him who loved us. For I am convinced that nether death nor life, neither angels or demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation [like dishes and laundry] will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.”
